DISCUSSION
GROUPS
MOMS
This
4-week discussion group will cover the many aspects of being a mom. Topics
include: changing feelings, changing relationships with family, friends and
spouse, feelings about staying home and/or
returning
to work, and the effects of media and society on mothering. Other topics can be
introduced by participants as well. Minimum: 5

Intro to Peer Facilitator Training
Facilitator
Training uses a group format that models the peer group experience and provides
an opportunity for personal growth and development. The training curriculum is designed to enhance communication and
presentation skills; improve confidence level in public speaking; provide
special techniques to help group members feel heard and have their feelings
validated; offer techniques for listening more effectively and speaking more
clearly and accurately; and prepare you to facilitate Mothers’ Center groups
from standard discussion outlines. This group is open to any Mothers’ Center
member who has an interest in learning more about peer group facilitation.
Minimum: 5.
*Current facilitator business will be
discussed the first 5-30 minutes of combined Intro/PFT sessions.

PFT
This
is the ongoing training support group for both the women who facilitate
support/discussion groups at the MCS and those who have completed Intro to PFT
to become facilitators. Topics involve brainstorming and problem solving, and
are determined
by the
facilitators’ needs. We will be a combined group with the Intro to PFT
trainees.
Day/Time: Tuesdays; 12:30-2:00 pm

Mothering A Child With Special Needs
This
is a monthly group for Moms of children with high or special needs, such as
ASD, ADHD, allergies, or developmental disabilities. Is your child easily
overwhelmed, distracted, frustrated, sensitive?
This
free group is open to all women to help with the challenges and to share
information. You do not need to be a member to attend. To register call
689-2827. Friends, spouses, children and snacks are welcome! *Childcare is not provided but children can
attend under mom’s supervision.

Mindful
Parenting
As parents, we may often find ourselves rushing
through a flurry of moments as we try to accomplish all the work involved in
parenting. Helping children become aware of their feelings and able to express
themselves are two very important skills that easily get overlooked. This workshop on
Mindful Parenting will help us explore how we approach parenting and how to
help our children develop the ability to feel comfortable within themselves,
have the skills to communicate and be proactive in resolving conflicts and
problems. Minimum: 5.

Coping
with the Holidays
The holiday season is
already upon us. It is “the season of stress” for many people. This is an
opportunity for mothers to have a place to discuss these stressors and what
hinders their ability to enjoy the same season that their children cherish.
Let’s identify what complicates the season and discuss ways to rejuvenate and
replenish ourselves for a more peaceful holiday season. Minimum: 5.

Massage Circle
Back
by popular demand, here's an opportunity to relax before the holidays. Come together
to work away those tight knots on your shoulders. Learn basic massage and
acupressure techniques for everyday health and wellness. This is a hands-on
workshop with a brief introduction. We will spend most of the time listening to
meditative music in candle lighting while we breathe deeply and apply the
massage and acupressure techniques on each other. Minimum: 5

My Gym
“My
Gym” has created an extraordinary program devised to help children physically, cognitively
and emotionally. Kids will have fun as they develop strength, balance,
coordination, fine and gross motor skills and flexibility. And the
best part? The “My Gym” in Stony Brook is offering us a free trial
class! Bring your child to their state-of-the-art facility for an hour of
music, dance, gymnastics and fun. Minimum: 6.

Dance & Creative Movement Class
Scientific
studies have proven that dance awakens and activates many of our mental
capacities. Dance in early childhood will actually prepare and develop the
brain for "higher learning" (focus, concentration, problem-solving, speech, reading, writing & more). In
addition, dance will help your child develop confidence and independence. Come
join in a fun-filled class of dance and creative movement. With the use of
props, music and lots of imaginative play, your child will have a positive,

“Cookie Exchange”. Let’s meet at Bethany’s house for some wine and appetizers
while we exchange cookies and bring home a variety of cookies for your family!
You bring your favorite holiday cookie in bags with six cookies each to
distribute to everyone who participates. (If eight people attend the “exchange”
you bring eight bags with six cookies in each bag! You would then go home with
eight different kinds of cookies!)
